It isn't very smart to be driving on the Black Rock Desert during a rainstorm, but I couldn't resist this time. I was very lucky to not be mired down. The desert is normally such a beautiful, quiet space - that is except when the Burning Man Festival is going on. Then tens of thousands of people settle on the Black Rock Desert to "do their thing".

Haying season is something all ranchers are involved with this month. It seems like the work will never end, but of course there are always other chores to do in the following months to come. And putting up the hay is imperitive to survive if your ranch has suffered a wildfire on the range and you might need to bring the cattle in early.

The Sheldon Antelope Refuge in Northwest Nevada has some of the most amazing landscapes, with long mesas and deep, narrow canyons. There are a few old homesteads built from the beautiful pink rock that was locally quarried - several opal mines - lots of proposed wilderness study areas - but not many antelope these days. There are burros, and many horses running wild. The antelope seem to have moved out of the refuge area and are now enjoying the alfalfa fields of the neighboring ranches.
