Tufted Phlox?
Greasy Creek

Less than a foot tall, thistle-like leaves. I've gone through hundreds of phlox pictures and all my books on this one.

I am lovin' your plant I.D.'s Is a book next? How about oak trees next. I never know one from the other. I know about the acorns and leaves but can't seem to remember. I can do birds and that is about it! Best to you. Linda

I'm glad Linda, but I'm afraid it gets a bit obsessive as new flowers continue to show, sometimes preempting more pressing work at hand - it's like going back to school to identify them. We'll have to reorganize the sidebar categories eventually, as already more flowers than anticipated, but now we have a place to go to look for the names of local species next year because some we won't remember. Thanks for commenting.

Hi, John - Am having a lot of fun with the Dry Crik botany class, especially since our NE Nevada blooms are about a month away...peppergrass it the closest I get to ID'ing the low-grower, too. The shrub appears to be a California native called "California Yerba Santa" (Eriodictyon californicum) that can get to 8', thanks again to the Calflora.org site. Krys
