In 2000,
the Western Folklife Center in Elko, Nevada, continued a project
entitled Voices of Youth. Eight teenagers were selected from applicants
throughout Elko County to participate in a series of workshops designed
to give each student "hands on" training and field experience in
the arts of photography and field recording of oral history under
the supervision of art coach Bruce Hucko and aural historian Jack
Loeffler. Each student was equipped with a professional camera,
cassette field recorder and microphone. The Voices of Youth project
has culminated in a traveling exhibit of students photographs and
a CD of oral history vignettes recorded and co-produced by the students.
The Voices of Youth exhibit includes photographic images and audio
recordings reflecting cultural and sociological aspects of the highly
diverse population of the rural west. Photographic images and 60-second
digital audio clips portray youth perspectives on ranch life, Native
American culture, mining, skateboarding, theater, and rural Western
heritage.
