SPECIAL ACTIVITIES, January 24-30, 2010:

Team Branding and Ranch Bronc Riding
January 24, 2010 at the Spring Creek Horse Palace
Team Branding and Ranch Bronc Riding is being held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, January 24 at the Spring Creek Horse Palace. There will be a Calcutta at the beginning of the event. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 11 and under, and free for children five and under. Please contact the Spring Creek Association at 775-753-6295 for information, or call J.M. Gold Mine Tours

Just as cowboys, fishermen and loggers write poetry, so have miners and their associates throughout the years (Robert Service is one of the most well-known). Get a glimpse of what inspires their prose and love of the mining "community." Newmont Mining Corporation, a National Cowboy Poetry Gathering sponsor, will give free tours to the Carlin operation (open pit gold mining operations). Elko County is one of the largest gold-producing areas in North America.

Sign up for the tour in the Western Folklife Center Gift Shop, or call Lisa Hoffman at 775/778-4608. SPECIAL NOTE: Because this is an operational facility, please remember to dress accordingly: long pants are preferred and closed-toe shoes are necessary.

Wagons Ho! at the California Trail Intrepretive Center
January 26 through January 30, 2010
Visit the new California Trail Interpretive Center located eight miles west of Elko: take Interstate 80 west to exit 292 ("the Hunter exit"). Open Tuesday, January 26 through Saturday, January 30 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. FREE ~ come and see the successful progress being made on exhibits and California Trail dioramas. Take a tour of the Center and discover what the future will hold. For more information, call 775/738-1849.

Special Bonus: Denny Miller (Duke Shannon on the television series, Wagon Train!) will be making a personal appearance at the Trail Center on Tuesday, January 26 and Wednesday the 27th, and an episode of Wagon Train! will be shown daily at 3:00 pm, followed by a discussion of how Hollywood's version of history might be different than what really happened.

Indian Tacos by the Great Basin College Native American Club
January 28 through January 30, 2010 - 731 VFW Way
Great Basin College Native American Club will be selling Indian Tacos at the VFW Hall, 731 VFW Way (3 blocks west of the Convention Center, near the intersection of 14th and College Avenue) Thursday, January 28, through Saturday, January 30, from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm. There will also be Native American cultural demonstrations.

Story Time at the Elko County Library
January 28, 2010
at 10:30 am, the Library will host a special Story Time for all young buckaroos. If you don't have a cowboy hat, you can join the fun by borrowing one from the Library just for story time. FREE program for all children, no pre-registration needed. For information, visit the Elko County Library or call 738-3066.

Cowboy Breakfast at IFA
January 29, 2010 - 390 30th Street
Join the IFA Country Store for a Cowboy Breakfast, Friday, January 29, starting at 8:00 am. IFA is located past Albertson’s off of Idaho Street at 390 30th Street. For more information call 775-738-6233.

Great Basin Cowboy Gear Show & Sale
January 12 through February 9, 2010
Held in the Halleck Bar Gallery of the Northeastern Nevada Museum. Quality cowboy gear and art from contempory craftsmen and artists: saddle makers, bit makers, spur makers, silversmiths, and rawhide braiders. Presented by J.M. Capriola Company and Elko Convention and Visitors Authority. January 19-21, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, January 22-30, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Reception on Friday, January 29 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Silver State Trade Show
January 17 through January 31, 2010
This trade show at the Elko County Fairgrounds will be open daily from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and feature hats, quilts, saddles, scarves, silver, antiques, leather, jewelry, furniture, artwork and more. Special Gallery Art, Photography and Jewelry Show
January 23 through January 30, 2010 at 460 Idaho Street
Donna Long, Ann P. Meredith, and Pamela Jones Brown will display their unique western art, photography and jewelry in the gallery adjacent to Cucina Fresca at 460 Idaho Street. The exhibit will open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saturday January 23 through Saturday, January 30 with receptions on Saturday, January 23, and Sunday, January 24, from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. Internationally acclaimed artist Donna Long’s paintings focus on her love of horses, with equine subjects ranging from the humorous to the surreal and will be featured in a Grand Reception on Thursday, January 28 at 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. All sales of Long’s artwork will benefit the Western Folklife Center. Also on exhibit will be Ann P. Meredith’s Tall in the Saddle, a collection of fine art gelatin silver prints representing 20 years of documenting cowgirls, ranch women and rodeo gals from 16 states. Joining the exhibit on Thursday, January 28 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm and Friday, January 29 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Pamela Brown will welcome new collectors with her Stoneprints™ design creations. One-of-a-kind personalized pieces of jewelry which inspire collectors to define their own timeless and individual style in semi-precious gemstones, amber, precious metal, coral, wood, freshwater and saltwater pearls, shell, ancient glass and antique artifacts - all diverse elements and colors individually knotted by hand with silk thread. Great Basin Native Market
January 27 through January 30, 2010
at 561 14th Street
A complete experience featuring fine Native American-made gifts and crafts from the interior West, live demonstrations of basket weaving, rawhide braiding, traditional social games, refreshments for sale, and more. The Native Market will also feature an open mic for poetry, storytelling, and singing of traditional Native American music and life ways. As in prior years, the Native Market will be located at the Girl Scout House, 561 14th Street (just North of Sherman Station/Elko Chamber of Commerce) and open Thursday, January 27 through Saturday, January 30, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.  

Cowcamp Trading Post
January 27 through January 30
in the Red Lion Hotel & Casino, 2065 Idaho Street. It's a roundup of makers of fine bits, spurs, saddles, braided rawhide, hats and boots, western art, music, clothing, jewelry, and much more. Shopping days are Wednesday, January 27 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and Thursday, January 28, through Saturday, January 30, from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. High Desert Western Art and Gear Show
January 28 through January 30, 2010
at the High Desert Inn

Kenny Walton's Cowboy Art and Gear Show

at the Stockmen's Casino ~ Kenny will be found once again at his booth in the foyer of the Stockmen's Hotel Lobby during the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Stop by for more information about the Cowboy Art and Gear Show locted on the 3rd Floor Atrium, or call Kenny at 775/778-9410.

National Cowboy Poetry Gathering Autograph Sessions
January 28 through 30, 2010 - Western Folklife Center and Elko Convention Center
Remember, many cowboy poets and musicians have autograph sessions scheduled during the Gathering. It's a great opportunity to say hello and pick up their latest work. Some sessions include multi-artist signings, such as for the tribute "Larry McWhorter Poetry CD" autograph session with Jean Prescott, Andy Hedges, Waddie Mitchell and Red Steagall.

While you're enjoying the many fun evening spots in Elko, don't forget the Jam Sessions occurring nightly at the Pioneer Saloon. All jam sessions start following the scheduled National Cowboy Poetry Gathering events ~ bring your instrument and join in.

Grammy-nominated western singer/songwriter Michael Martin Murphey will play in the Club Max Showroom

Stockmen’s Hotel and Casino
Call the Stockmen’s Casino at 775-738-5141 for more information on any of the following:
Nathan Dean will perform at the Stockmen’s Casino Showroom,  on January 27 and 28 at 9:00 pm, and on January 29 and 30, at 9:30 pm. Admission is free. Cowboy jam sessions take place upstairs in the Stockmen’s
Ballroom  January 28 through January 30. Bring your own instrument and join in the musicmaking. The sessions start following the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering activities and can last until the cows come home. Join with friends for music, poetry and storytelling.

Gold Dust West
