Length: 3:55  ~ Listen

Meet Elmo Ray Scott, leader of the African American quartet gospel group Stars of Harmony as he discusses the song “Where I Am You Brought Me.”

When the great folklorist John A. Lomax traveled through rural east Texas in the 1930’s and ‘40’s he discovered a rich tradition of African American quartet gospel singing. That tradition continues to this day, as we learn in the latest What’s in a Song that aired on Saturday September 25th on NPR’s Weekend Edition. In the old days, these groups sang without accompaniment, but today’s quartets have “plugged in” and electrified their sound. In this installment, we meet Elmo Ray Scott, leader of the African American quartet gospel group Stars of Harmony as he discusses the song “Where I Am You Brought Me.”

This installment of What’s in a Song was produced in collaboration with City Lore with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
