La Llorona

Cipriano Vigil 09/18/05 NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday

Length: 2:59 ~ Listen

La Llorona is arguably the best-known traditional song from Latin America. Versions of it span the length of the hemisphere. Sometimes it’s a cautionary song to keep children away from rushing waters. It’s also interpreted as a song to warn against the treachery of marrying out of your class. In this version, American treasure, Cipriano Vigil sings and tells its story, the way he learned it in his small New Mexican village.

La Llorona is part of a CD called "Los Folkloristas de Nuevo Mexico", available from Cipriano Vigil.
