Fifteen years ago, the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering made welcome some extraordinary corrido performers in Elko, Nevada. Featured in this podcast is Johnny Whelan, a native of southern New Mexico, singing and playing guitar and harmonica on a traditional corrido titled, "Sangre de Indio."

During the 2008 National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, we will be highlighting Mexican ranching traditions through an exhibit and programs. We are currently exploring areas in the rural West to locate practitioners of the corrido tradition, a Mexican song form that oftten celebrates events and locales.Two corrido events featuring contests and workshops will be held this summer in Nampa, Idaho, and Woodburn, Oregon, and recordings and prizes are available to those who participate.
