I'd Like to be in Texas for the Roundup. . .

Buck Ramsey, photo courtesy of Bette RamseyIn this episode of Ranch Rhymes: Cowboy Poetry and Music from the Western Folklife Center Archives, we hear the late Buck Ramsey singing "I'd Like To Be In Texas" at the Lowell Folk Festival in 1994.

Length: 6:06 ~ Listen or Podcast from iTunes.

Attributed to Jack C. Williams and Carl Copeland in 1916, this song was turned into a Western classic starting with William Alonzo "Lon" Fishback in the 1920s. This performance by Buck Ramsey can also be found on "Buck Ramsey: Hittin' the Trail," a CD on the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings label. Listen to cowboy poet, J.B. Allen, recite the poem in our online exhibition, Back at the Ranch: An Artful Life. Buck Ramsey is also featured in this exhibition, with his original and now-classic poem, "Anthem."
