On exhibition in the Pioneer Saloon at the Western Folklife Center are paintings by one of North Dakota's premier painters, Walter Piehl Jr., a leader in celebrating the pagentry of one of his state's most indigenous cultural events - the rodeo.
Among Piehl's favorite themes is the interaction between horse and rider in the rodeo arena. Born to a family that raised rodeo stock, Walter rode as a matter of course. He currently teaches in the art department at Minot State University.
The Walter Piehl Jr. Retrospective, a glorious full-color (softcover) book of 191 pages is for sale through our Gift Shop at 501 Railroad Street, Elko: call 775-738-7508 for more information.
This exhibition was funded in part by the Nevada Arts Council.
