About the CD and the Concert
Over millennia, countless people have come to the Grand Canyon in awe. Many have attempted to put into words, music or visual interpretation the inspiration of the place, and this concert features performers who have done just that.
This concert celebrates the completion of the Western Folklife Center's CD, Songs and Stories from Grand Canyon on Smithsonian Folkways Records. The concert performers are featured on this CD, which represents an incredible array of traditions rooted in work and life in the Grand Canyon. From the stories of mule packers who traverse the Canyon every day to the songs of boatmen and river guides, the stories and music presented here are rooted in place - and specifically this place.
Hundreds of hours of fieldwork provided the foundation for the songs and stories heard in this concert and on the CD, which was five years in the making. Western Folklife Center Founding Director Hal Cannon says, "This recording is a rare look at how people who live here, year after year, have interpreted the Grand Canyon in story and song. We hope that it will be the first of a series that explores the music and stories of America's most treasured places."
